It all started Tuesday morning at about 4 am, with contractions went from 1 hour, to 20 minutes, to 5 minutes apart, lasting about 45 seconds each at 8am. I didn’t think much of it, as I had been having contractions on and off for weeks. Evan had a dentist apt, so I sent him off to it, telling him not to worry. I emailed our midwife to let her know what was going on. The contractions continued until about 2pm, when they stalled out. At 3pm, they came back right at 5 minutes apart again. Evan made me some mac and cheese for dinner around 4:30, and then I went in to take a nap. I slept from 5-6:30, with only some contractions waking me up. Contractions were stalled again when I got up at 6:30. I bounced on my birth ball, walked a little bit and nothing was happening. At 8 pm, I took black and blue cohosh, had Evan rub my legs/feet and did some nipple stimulation, and they contractions came back right away. They were getting stronger with each one. I called the midwife at 9pm, and she said she was surprised to hear from me, as it had been 13 hours since my email, she figured I had just puttered out again. She said she could hear it was real in my voice, and would head over to our house soon.
Evan cleaned up.. vacuumed, and picked up all the odds and ends, I made brownies (gotta feed the midwife), and got the coffee pot going. I spent some time on FF chat rooms, talking to people.. wasting time between contractions.
Karen got to our house at 11pm, and checked me out, I was 4cm dilated and 90% effaced. I was so excited! We hung around for awhile, chatting and pacing around the house, it was getting harder and harder to get through contractions. Around 11:45 the assistant showed up at the house. The assistant suggested we take a walk around the neighborhood at 12:30. We went outside contractions were 2minutes and 45 seconds apart, lasting just over 1 minute. When we came back, she checked my BP, 118/80, and Baby’s Heart rate 160 bpm. I spent some time talking to my aunt and mom on the computer, as they were both wondering what was going on.
At 1:30, I got in the tub. Wow.. that was great! Contractions were coming hard and fast. We lit my favorite candle, and just hung out in the bathroom… at 1:55, Evan got me some Cherry Ice, and I ate about ½ of it, before I had to stop due to contractions. Karen came in and checked the baby’s heart rate, still around 160 bpm.
Around 2:30, labor became really hard and fast. At this time, I pretty much stopped talking, and really had to concentrate. I moved around a lot in the tub, and honestly don’t remember much of what happened. I know I was making lots of noise, and the midwife checked me, and I was 10cm and ready to go. She told me I could push whenever I was ready. I wasn’t getting the urge to push though, so I didn’t. After a little while (3:20) it was very hard to stand the contractions, and I still wasn’t getting the urge to push, so they asked me to move to the bed. I honestly did not want to go, and when I got out of the tub, instead of going to the bed, I moved the assistant out of my way and I went to the toilet. Evan said I told them I had to pee, but I don’t remember that, I just remember not wanting to go the bed. Once I got there, I totally felt the urge to push, and started pushing. My water broke at this time, with a huge pop during one of my pushes. I remember having really good pushes and feeling her move down. I pushed for 40 minutes, though it left like a lot less than that. Our Daughter came into the world at 4:02am.
As soon as she came out, Karen handed her to me, the cord was around her neck, and also very short, so I had a slightly hard time holding her. Karen got the cord off of her neck, just as the placenta was falling out of me into the toilet!! I held her while Evan cut her cord, and then handed the baby right to Evan. I got the phone to call my mom as Karen cleaned up. I moved to the bed then, my legs were shaking making it hard to walk. I had a very small tear no need for stitches.
It was a wonderful delivery! I then sat on the bed and held her for while before they did anything to her.
